Discussion:
Files opening maximized

I stopped using CS3 for a good while, in large part because of this behavior. I
just can't stand it. But I'm sort of addicted to the clone source palette, the
main feature worth upgrading for, in my eyes.

But every time I open a file if no files are open, it mazimizes: it's my least
favorite view mode, and it drives me nuts to have to hit F three times every
time I open an image when no other images are open. Especially when I'm opening
two images together, because I need to copy one image into the other: often I
copy one image into an identically sized image, and PS's only reliable
technique for doing that quickly and making sure things are lined up is by
shift-dragging the layer from one image into the other, because of course
copy/paste will unreliably introduce an offset. This offset behavior is
especially annoying in CS3 because edge snapping doesn't seem to work. I really
want things to open windowed by default.

I know I've mentioned it before. I guess I'd like some clue as to whether
there has been any action on this since the beta was released, and if I can
expect to not regret upgrading. The clone source palette has a grip on my
black, shrivelled heart, and so I'm going to upgrade: the question is whether
or not I'm going to spend the 18 months of CS3's existence gritting my teeth
every time I open a file. Can the view mode for opening files be specified? Can
view modes be removed from the view mode cycle? Will it default to opening
files in maximized mode in the final product?

Adobe PLEASE make that possible.

Can view modes be removed from the view mode cycle?

This is something that I desperately want to be able to do as well. Surely a
Preference could be created to handle this?

Probably. Unfortunately.

Burdening Photoshop Users with that ill-conceived "Maximize Screen mode" is
probably one of the worst things that Adobe have ever inflicted upon us.

I am fairly sure that there will be an avalanche of complaints about that
(and about putting a Close button almost on top of the Pop-out Menu in the
Palettes/Panels) once CS3 ships.

I just hope that Adobe are already working on a dot-release to address both of
these problems.

To copy a layer and have exact placement in a file of the same size:

select the layer

in the layer palette duplicate layer

When the dialog pops up tell it what file to target.

hit OK

Buko, I know that, but it's much more annoying to do than shift-dragging.

Although that works beautifully to place layers accurately in another file, it
does nothing to KILL the abominable Maximized Screen mode stone dead.

Now if someone would just write a Script to that, a lot of us would be
eternally grateful!

I have just tried changing the shortcut for "Full Screen mode with menus" to F13.

You might find that doing that helps to avoid some of your aggravation with the Maximized mode.

You can short-cut each individual fullscreen mode, but can't make a custom
cycle: I'd need to dedicate two keys to it. Again, not what I want. And I don't
want to *have* to change my view mode when opening a file: the one view mode
they picked is the one I absolutely can't stand, and is almost universally
useless to me in all circumstances.

Harry:

I entirely agree with you ?and I suspect that there will be thousands more
like us when they see what the Photoshop team has done in CS3 with this useless
new screen mode of theirs.

I just made the F13 shortcut to save me from having to do the F-ing
(literally) cycle through the modes to get the window I normally want!

harry,
Photoshop remembers whether you were in windowed mode or a fullscreen mode
when you close the application. If you were last in windowed mode and you
launch Photoshop by opening files, they'll open in window mode as well. If you
don't want to open in fullscreen mode, switch out of it before you close your
file and the next files you open will open in windowed mode.

Not true: at least, trivially disprovable with the beta. Go into fullscreen
with menus, quit the app, relaunch, open an image, and it will open maximized.

You don't even have to quit the app: with a fullscreened image, close it, open
a new one, it will open maximized, same PS session.

You cannot know how annoying this is to me. I do try to keep quiet after I
mention a bug once per PS release, really. But OMGWTFBBQ, I hate this behavior.
It is especially aggravating with the bug with zoomed-in images when going into
fullscreen with menus mode, how the canvas shoots down to the bottom of the
screen: all too often, an image opens maximized, I zoom in (not realizing the
mode), pan the image, go "F%&$!" when the image comes to the edge and won't pan
anymore, hit F, and the pan is undone as the canvas goes all the way to the
bottom of the screen.

If I know which mode I'm in, I can be sure to not zoom before I get to the
mode I want. But maximized mode fools me starting off. Seriously, this is
stunningly annoying.

But if you were in "Full Screen with Menus" mode previously, Photoshop CS3 will
bump you back into that god-awful Maximized mode when you re-launch.

It's no good Chad, "Maximized" IS an abomination and an impediment to normal
productivity ? and I am absolutely certain that an awful lot of the more
experienced users of Photoshop are going to be telling you this.

It just might be a good idea if you Adobe people finally faced up to the fact
that you have made a major error of judgement on this GUI-design ? and
worked-out a way for Users to disable "Maximized" if they don't want it.

I'm running GM.

I open 2 files, and go to Full Screen w/ Menus.
I quit the app.
I drop the same 2 files onto my dock PS icon to open
They open in Windowed mode.

Are we happy, or am I missing something?

We're happy if that's what's going to happen in Windows PS, too.

I appreciate you looking into this (and getting the issue solved, if that's
what has happened here). Thanks very much.
