Discussion:
adobeowl.dll error WinXP SP2
(too old to reply)

Have successfully installed CS3 prerelease on WinXP SP2, entered SNs and
activated successfully. But both InDesignCS3 and PhotoShopCS3 fail on launch
("has encountered an error and needs to close") with reference to adobeowl.dll.
Additionally, IllustratorCS3 fails on launch saying Missing required Plugins:
BRS Pencil Tool and ExpandS.
I created a "virgin" administrative user and installed CS3 when logged in as
such but no difference.
Any ideas?

Where did you get yr "pre-release" version from (and what do you understand by
the "pre-release" version??)?

As far as I was aware, the full retail version has not yet been released!

The idea is (as I understand it), is that you PAY pre-release and get a
"better" price and then you wait until the product is released later in the
month.

Are you talking about the beta-version?

My company is an Adobe Authorized Service (ASN) Member and as such we get one
full Mac and one full PC version of all Adobe software. Last week (Apr. 2),
Adobe posted what it called a "prerelease" version of CS3 Design Premium for
ASN member downloads. It is NOT beta software, the idea is that ASN members
being service bureaus, are supposed to get software 2-3 weeks ahead of the rest
of the world so we can familiarize ourselves with it by the time customers
start sending us files for output to plate.

no prob... I'm only trying to get this to work, and Adobe Tech Support says for
at least the next few weeks, there is no "official" CS3 support... only what
forum users like us can cobble together between ourselves. I just wanted to
know if anyone else had encountered the "adobeowl" error yet.

I don't think that Adobe has ever offered Tech. Support for any of their products until the new version has actually shipped?

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Official support channels aren't open until the product ships. This is correct.

I don't see any issues logged against that dll in the database, but because
you have other apps failing as well it sounds like there's either a system
level issue, or you had a bad install. Did you install the whole Suite or did
you install the point products separately
Can you provide more information about the system you installed on? 3rd party
hardware, RAM, drives, etc? Have you been able to successfully install on
another machine at your location?

At the time I installed CS3 on the Win XP box I already had Acrobat 8 Pro
installed, as well as the CS2 Premium Suite. The PC in question is a Dell
Dimension XPS Gen2, 3.0 GHz, 1 Gb Ram, 110 Gb hard drive (70 Gb still free). I
never beta tested Photoshop CS3 on that machine, tho I had tested it on a Mac
G5 (where, by the way, I successfully installed the Mac version of the CS3
Prerelease and have had no problems).
I installed every available program in the Windows CS3 suite except Acrobat
8, since it was already installed on the Dell.
The installation succeeded, I restarted the Dell and tried launching
Illustrator CS3. It asked for the serial number which I entered successfully,
then asked for activation by internet, which it did successfully also. It asked
for registration info which I filled out but meanwhile, Illustrator CS3 was
trying to launch in the background and had already popped-up the alert about
Missing Required Plug-ins (BRS Pencil Tool and ExpandS). Hitting OK just make
the program quit.
I tried an uninstall, successfully, then created a "virgin" administrator
user account, logged-in as that "virgin" admin and tried a reinstall. After
restart/re-login, same problems as before.

I know that our most thorough uninstall scripts do remove Acrobat, so there may
be some overlap there that caused a problem. It would probably be best to
uninstall using the script and return the system to a clean state for
reinstall, then do the whole suite in one shot.
I can provide the instructions for the script if you'd like to try it.
Otherwise, it will be provided via links on the Labs site as well as in our
knowledge base once we launch the CS3 products.

Thanks so much. I think that script is also on my ASN download site; in any
event, what I downloaded unzipped into a folder called WinCS3Clean containing 8
items, but I don't know how to use them. Any instructions would be greatly
appreciated!
Acrobat 8 itself does still function on the PC but we've noticed the plugins
for Office have disappeared, so I guess I may as well uninstall and then
reinstall the whole suite. Thanks!

Thanks, I got the instr's and ran the script successfully a few times,
restarting after each run. It wiped out all traces of CS3 and also of the
Acrobat 8 Pro we'd been using since November '06.
I then tried reinstalling CS3 Prerelease, including its version of Acrobat 8
Pro this time; however, same problem with same programs quitting on launch as
before, and with same messages as before. The version of Acrobat 8 Pro did,
however, launch; but it showed a strange serial number that was neither our
original nor the one from the CS3 Prerelease --very odd, but it did seem to
work fine.
In any event, I uninstalled again and then re-installed Acrobat 8 Pro from
our original CD. It's back to running fine again, with the original serial
number. Bottom line: I guess I won't bother with the CS3 Prerelease, at least
on the PC. I can always testdrive it on the Mac where it's running fine. Thanks
for all the suggestions and help!
